Calligraphic nib pen and some brush + photoshop. I noticed that the calligraphic nib pen works better with calligraphy inks rather than cheaper pen inks. maybe the thicker, the better.

Hey guys, It's been a really, really long time since my last post. A lot of crazy things happening in life, so I haven't had a chance to keep up with my posts. Here are a few things I've been up to recently. For more, feel free to visit my Blog.

I'm a huge Crysis fan, so here's my homage to one of the best fps games ever! :)

Here are a few warm up drawings/screen shot studies of various movies/shows. :)

And a quick Rogue redesign. I might do a few more just for fun in the next few days. :)

This was an anniversary present for my fiancee Ameenah.

Here is the line drawing and value study:

The following two illustrations were concept pieces for AlphaTeamGo, a Concept Art/Video Game site that will launch in 2012 (That's all I can say for now).

The frog like figure was supposed to reference the cover of Quantum of Solace and the environment is a post nuclear playground shot.

The Breakthrough Contest Has Broken Cover!

For the past year, Richard Solomon and staff worked on creating the first ever Breakthrough Contest. The idea took shape while brainstorming last winter. All artists appreciate how hard it is to break through and succeed as a professional illustrator in today’s market; this is why we named the contest “Breakthrough”. We wanted to reach young artists and as such the rules stated that the entrant must be under 35 years old with less than 5 years professional experience from anywhere in the world.

The goal was to create a contest that would produce long term benefits for the winner since every young artist’s greatest concern is to have a successful career. Unlike other competitions which simply offer a cash prize or a scholarship, we have gone a step further. The winner would be brought to New York City, have their portfolio shown to top art/creative directors, be given the constructive criticism and advice by the industry’s top pros to succeed as a professional illustrator, and receive a cash prize.

In March of 2011, we opened the contest to submissions. Soon thereafter, we began to receive a diverse collection of portfolios from artists all over the world. We were soon flooded with an amazing number of very talented young contestants. At the end of 3 months, we closed the contest to submissions and began judging. Our panel consisted of 20 art/creative directors and top illustrators who scored the submissions online based on skill, professionalism, and potential commercial viability.

We can now proudly announce the winner: Michal Dziekan, a 26 year old illustrator from Warsaw, Poland; a true diamond in the rough. Since 2009 Michal has been working as a freelance illustrator on book covers, editorial/advertising illustration, t-shirt/character designs, and animation. You can see more of his work on his website michaldziekan.com. We look forward to bringing Michal to NYC in late October, introduce him to many art/design directors, and award him his prize.

The light at the end of the tunnel isn't so dim. I'm keeping myself busy with good tunes, good ink, and an endless amount of heart. I am hoping thats enough. So as you can see I have been lacking with the updates. I am just going to lay down some sketchbook stuff, because my scanner is small enough to fit these pages in it. I was told by a buddy of mine that when you are having motivational problems you should focus on drawing subject matter that interest you; that you know for a fact you enjoy drawing. I find that to be true for me when I draw portraits. It use to be bikes, but now it's definitely portraits! I have more to post but this will have to do for now.

I am making a few changes in my future life. Hopefully everything will work out! Since finishing school I have realized that I just do not know enough. I have not been able to post work due to lack of materials but I have not given up on sharing with the world. I haven't posted, on my blog, a link to my website so you can at least see what I have been working on, which is available here. Thanks for checkin the work. Back From The Dead? :)

Hey Guys!

It's been ages since my last post. I was hospitalized for a long time while undergoing some major surgery. My appendix ruptured, causing major infection in my body. According to the surgeon, showing up to the ER a day or two later would have resulted in death - Not the most comforting thing to hear after you come out of surgery :)

Additionally, according to the surgeon, I was walking around with this busted organ for weeks, maybe months?! He was puzzled that I was even alive at that point. Luckily, the man was one of VA's best surgeons and he saved my life.

Now, I have to get through the recovery period. It will take several months before I am back to 100% but my body is healing super fast - thank you veganism and Ameenah!! :)

As a result, all current projects were either put on hold or cancelled. However, I want to thank all my clients for their kind support and kind words through such a tough time and for being so understanding.

Bellow is a partial collection of things finished right before surgery and things left unfinished after the incident.

This was a series of Illustrations for Playboy Magazine.

It was for a fiction story consisting of three intertwining chapters focusing on hillbilly gangsters and underage prostitutes. Check out the new issue for the full story.

And here are all the initial sketches for the above illustrations.

I was hired by Newsweek to do a cover of the Somalian sea pirates that were plundering the news for weeks. It was a quick turnaround assignment (only two days) and the project was cancelled and changed to a different story before going to print. Below are my submissions for the cover.

The next Illustration was for ESPN Fantasy Football Magazine 2011. It's an action shot of the wide receiver of the Houston Texans, Andre Johnson.

The next few images were for an advertising campaign for CPNB. This job had to be cancelled due to my hospitalization, but here are the few sketches that I managed to complete before surgery.

Here is a personal piece of Solid Snake of Metal Gear Solid. I'm hoping to have this colored sometime soon. It's also inked traditionally, which is something I have not done in a while. :)

And this....was my first quick sketch (from a photo) after being released from the hospital. I felt like I had not drawn in years, hence the clunkiness. Time to get back into this drawing business. hehehe :)

So I am officially out of school as of last week. There is alot of steps to take to get to where I want to be artistically, mentally, and emotionally. I haven't given myself much time to settle down lately, but I'm sort glad. My fingers are crossed. Lets hope for the best. Until my best comes around you guys will have to settle for this.

The top panel is from a personal project I will be continuing for the next couple years . I'm not ready to distribute any real information on this project, but if you stick around long enough on my journey you all will hopefully see it. Hopefully ;p. The others are sketchbook pages. enjoy

Hi everyone, to keep up with the lovely work everyone is putting up, here is my tiny contribution.

With so many travels these days I barely find time to make nice posts with scanned sketches. This is a warm up piece from today. I never learned how to use watercolor properly even though an old friend gave me some good lessons. Thanks Jenny, I am sorry I did not pay more attention.
So whenever I feel in a dead end, I just know I can go over with other media. In this case I used nupastel. And I gave it a photoshop last touch to clean up.
Hopefully I can go back to posting more sketches regularly soon.

Below is an illustration for Crain Communications-Workforce Management. It's for an article titled The Thought Police and talks about technology that will allow employers to spy on what employees do on work computers, especially monitoring social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter.

NEW ILLUSTRATION UPDATE AND THE SPARK IS BACK IN ACTION!!!!

This is the new full page illustration for RIDES Magazine. This time the focus was on Tupac Shakur (as the Toyota MR-2) and R-Kelly (as the Nissan GT-R). This one was my personal favorite from the series and it was a blast to draw Tupac for two jobs in a row.

In other news, The Spark graphic novel is back in development. The project was on hold for quite some time now. Between being super busy with the freelancing and not too satisfied with my first few pages of the comic, I decided to research old European and American comics a bit more, looking at my favorites Will Eisner, Georges Rem (Herge),Max Bunker and many others.

What you see below is the new, slightly different direction I am taking and the revision of the original page 2. The lines are a bit bolder and looser. Hopefully, I can have more updates soon, but let me know what you guys think of it so far.

So I have something to post =). I am collaborating with a really talented group of artist on a book called Mean While. it will be printed soon, so when that happens I will lets you know. Its gonna be full color so I really excited for the outcome. There will be about 10 different artist included. I will be sure to link them once the book is printed. We all get 2 pages each (mine are at the top). And some of my warm up doodles as well.

RESIDENT EVIL COMIC PAGE + ILLUSTRATION UPDATE

I finally got some time in between projects to enjoy some PS3 gaming. Resident Evil 5 was my most recent adventure and I absolutely love that game. I decided to do a 3-4 page comic based on the gameplay and the image above is the first of the set.

I also recently acquired the Wacom Intuos 4 tablet. While it took me half a day to get used to the new, more textured and natural feeling of the surface, it's a huge improvement despite the quick tip wear. The drawing feels so much more natural and the texture truly feels like paper at times, especially after using the slicker surface of older models for so many years.

Below is a panel showing the inks using my new favorite custom chisel brush. It really feels like drawing with a marker. :) I highly recommend the new tablet if you do most of your work digitally.

I have also been illustrating these half page, three-panel comics for Boy's Life Magazine each month and here is an example of this long running series that will be out in the next issue.

The image below was an illustration for the upcoming Military Officer Magazine. It accompanied a story about a WWII pilot's wife who accidentally served her husband food with hairs. Not wanting to upset him before he goes on his mission, she decided to keep the little secret to herself.

ADVERTISING CAMPAIGN FOR PORT AUTHORITY

These four illustration were created as an advertising campaign for Port Authority of New York & New Jersey. They will be large poster prints located at airports such as the JFK and LaGuardia, as well as bus stations around New York and New Jersey. The images are to alert travelers of suspicious items left around the terminals and to pay attention while waiting.

BACK TO BOSNIA: A DOCUMENTARY (PLEASE SUPPORT)

* I know this is not the appropriate post, but I need your help in spreading the word about this documentary. Much appreciated!

Sabina Vajraca, the New York based film director and native of my home town Banja Luka, directs the documentary Back To Bosnia. The film follows the Vajraca family as they return to Bosnia years after the war to reclaim their stolen property occupied by a Serb family who seized it ten years before. The documentary has won a number of admirable awards around the world and is a thought provoking display of a genocide that took place so shortly after Nazi Germany.

The massacres and ethical cleansing in the Balkans were unique in that the suffering was broadcast all over the world and those with the power to act and stop the madness turned their backs, allowing another Hitler era to be born.

While the United States takes pride in its citizens being of many cultural backgrounds, the religious harmony that existed in ex-Yugoslavia was unique. No other place in the world had a mosque from the 1500's and a modern day catholic church share the same street. Banja Luka alone had 16 mosques, all which were wiped from the face of the earth by the serbs during wartime.

I'm asking for your support in spreading the word about this movie by adding it to your queue on NETFLIX. If enough people add the film, it will become available for rent and help the directors reach an even wider audience.

It's hard to believe it's been almost 18 years since I last saw Banja Luka. I try to hold onto the better memories of my childhood, but I will never be able to understand how such a pointless war carried on for so long without anyone stepping in sooner. Failure to act is the same as an attack if you ask me.

NEW RIDES MAGAZINE ILLUSTRATION: CHARLIZE THERON AND TIA CARRERE

New Illustration for RIDES Magazine. This issue showcases the Bugatti personified as Charlize Theron and the Porsche as Tia Carrere.

The first sketch I submitted focused on the movie Aeon Flux for the upper section of the drawing. I originally wanted to portray contrast between the city scape and island, but the movie was not as popular as the Oscar winning Monster. So instead of focusing on the movie references, I went with the heritage of the two ladies: South Africa for Charlize and Hawaii for Tia. I also added Wayne from Wayne's World in the lower section since Tia is known for her appearance in the movie.

XXL MAGAZINE ILLUSTRATION: ILLUMINATI IN HIP HOP

This was a full page illustration for XXL Magazine. It was for an article that talked about the history of the Illuminati in American culture and Hip-Hop. Where it originates from? How does it allegedly play a role in American society? When did it become a factor in hip hop. In 1996, Tupac released his album Killuminati dispelling the many rumors of the Illuminati that existed in Hip Hop.

This illustration went through quite a few revisions. Below are the first three sketches I submitted.
Kanye West is known for gesturing the Illuminati symbol with his hands so I wanted to show him spying on Tupac.

I was shooting for a comic book cover look in my second sketch. The white owl is usually associated with the Illuminati cult and the Cyclops is representing the seeing eye generally found on the pyramid.

The third sketch was supposed to be an alternate cover of Tupac's Killuminati album.

The first sketch was the direction the editors wanted to go but I was asked to do further tweaking based on that approach.

I tried to toss out a few ideas I had floating in my head, but the fourth idea was definitely my favorite. I really wanted to do a more painterly approach for this illustration and a completely different composition.

I also did a value study of the last sketch to push this idea. Luckily the art director felt the same about this drawing and I was asked to do more tweaking of the image. The editors felt I should make the main figure Tupac since there's mention of him in the article, especially the release of Killuminati.

I initially added some plants around the figure to suggest fear and isolation but was asked to change it to flames as they appear in most illuminati images above and around the pyramid.

Back to the Future Gallery1988 Release

Katie and Jensen over at Gallery 1988 asked me to create a series of paintings for a special holiday release (Thanks guys!!). We all loved Back to the Future so here we are! TAX ATTACKS

Hello Everyone,

The past few weeks have been extremely busy. A new wave of projects poured in after Thanksgiving and I wasn't quite able to keep up with the daily drawings. I just finished my first assignment which was a full page illustration for Military Officer Magazine. It's a continuation of the Super Hero series which has been on halt for a while. This time it was for an article that talked about the many new changes to our tax programs in 2011.

This piece was extremely fun to ink. I was going with a more traditional comic book style and tried hard to give the lines a more natural look while still using the Wacom tablet.

The selected concept was in reference to H. G. Wells' War of the Worlds. The inked image below was another concept I might finish for myself another time as I'm somewhat happy with the overall composition and perspective. With this alternate concept , I wanted to give the hero an actual nemesis that could portray the taxes rather than having him always battling papers and numbers. Since this might essentially take away from the reading too much, we decided to go with the idea above.

The last idea was referencing Atlas from Greek Mythology. At first, I thought this was a good way to show tension and struggle with the weight, but it simply didn't work well for this article and was compositionally very weak.

Lastly, I wanted to create a Super Hero character that would be used for all future articles since this is an ongoing series. Giving the publication its own character would create more consistency since the images are usually linked to tax related articles. I have not received any feedback about the reuse of this particular design, but maybe it is too boring showing the same figure flying around every time. Either way, I want to thank Jill for keeping this series going and allowing me to be experimental with my work.
